Overview
The McKenzie County Geographic Information Services (GIS) Department is dedicated to providing spatial data management, analysis and mapping resources to enhance the workflows of various county departments. The GIS team aims to integrate location intelligence across the county organization. By leveraging geospatial information and resources, county departments can become more location-aware, make better-informed decisions and operate more efficiently.
Growth of GIS in McKenzie County
GIS is an evolving system of data, hardware and software. McKenzie County's GIS journey began with a few individuals and departmental use of GIS service vendors a couple of decades ago. With the growth of oil exploration in the Bakken region, the GIS Department was formally established in 2014. Since then, the department has expanded, including a team of up to three skilled professionals in 2023. GIS service vendors continue to provide crucial components for the county's GIS infrastructure.
McKenzie County's GIS Future
The GIS Department will continue to support McKenzie County departments, external entities and public users by providing quality data, map resources, web services and technical support.
