Powers and Duties

The powers of water resource districts are set forth in Chapter 61-16.1 of the ND Century Code.

The McKenzie County Water Resource District Board is responsible for managing and regulating the county’s water resources to ensure effective water management, flood control and conservation. The board has the authority to construct, maintain and operate water management projects such as dams, levees and drainage systems. It can also acquire property, enter contracts and collaborate with other governmental entities to carry out its duties.

In addition to managing water infrastructure, the board oversees floodplain management, monitors water quality and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations regarding water use. It has the power to levy taxes and fees to fund water resource projects and maintain financial sustainability. The board’s overall mission is to protect and preserve the county's water resources for public use, agricultural needs and environmental sustainability.
