Fire Safety Awareness

Attention

McKenzie County has established Burn Restrictions until further notice, in accordance with ND Century Code 33.01-15-04. These restrictions are reviewed and approved annually by the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners.

Due to very dry conditions, extreme fuel loads and the possibility of having fire weather well into December, the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) has updated and amended the 2024 Fire Emergency Burn Restrictions for McKenzie County. If the County gets rain or snow, the BOCC can ease the restrictions based on weather changes. If it does NOT rain or snow, the current restrictions will stay in place. Click here for the approved burn restrictions. Please call our office, should you have any questions (701-444-7483).

  • Burn permits are required year-round.
  • Permits require approval from both the local fire department and the Upper Missouri District Health Unit, which issues the actual permit.

For assistance with obtaining a burn permit, please contact the McKenzie County Emergency Management office at 701-444-7483 or 701-444-7144.

Home Fire Safety Tips

In Case of a Fire Emergency

  • Create an Emergency Plan: Every household should have a fire escape plan. Identify two exits from each room and establish a meeting spot outside. Practice the plan regularly with all family members.
  • Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke alarms are installed in every sleeping room and on every level of the home. Test them monthly, and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers in key locations like the kitchen, garage and workshop. Ensure everyone in the home knows how to use them.
  • Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with local burn restrictions and fire safety regulations to prevent accidental fires.

Following these guidelines can help protect your home and loved ones in the event of a fire.
