The McKenzie County Correctional Facility encourages family and friends to visit inmates. All visitations will be scheduled on an individual basis and by appointment only. Only two adults may visit at one time and no phones are allowed in the video visitation area. Click here to schedule your inmate visit (must schedule a day in advance to get approved). Listings for Current Year takings are available after the first week of October. Tax Sales are conducted in the Board Room of the McKenzie County Courthouse on the Third Tuesday of November at 10:00 AM CT. The next sale date is November 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM CT in the McKenzie County Courthouse (201 5th St NW, Watford City, ND 58854). Please arrive early to register. Real Estate statements are mailed in early-mid December; state law requires that they be mailed by December 26 each year. If you have not received your tax statement by January 1, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at (701)444-7400 or by email at treas@co.mckenzie.nd.us.

Mobile Home statements are mailed in December; state law requires that they be mailed by January 10 each year. If you have not received your tax statement by January 1, please contact the Tax Equalization Office at (701) 444-7493.

Real Estate taxes are due and payable on January 1. If the balance is paid in full by February 15, there is a 5% discount applied. If you choose to make two 1/2 payments the first half (plus any special assessments) is due by March 1 and the second half installment is due by October 15.

Mobile Home taxes are due and payable by January 10. If the balance is paid in full by February 15, there is a 5% discount applied. If you choose to make two 1/2 payments the first half is due by March 1 and the second half installment is due by July 1.

Penalties are as follows:

Real Estate – 1st Half

  • March 2 – 3%
  • May 1 – 3%
  • July 1 – 3%
  • October 1 – 3%

Real Estate – 2nd Half

  • October 16 – 6%

Mobile Home – 1st Half

  • March 2 – 2%
  • April 1 – 2%
  • May 1 – 2%
  • June 1 – 2%

Mobile Home – 2nd Half

  • July 2 – 2%
  • August 1 – 2%
  • September 1 – 2%
  • October 1 – 2%

Interest accrues at 1% per month beginning the 2nd year taxes are owed.

To receive the Veterans Credit, you must meet the eligibility requirements, submit an application and provide proper military service documentation to the Tax Equalization Director’s Office. To receive the Homestead Credit, you must meet the eligibility requirements and submit an application with the Tax Equalization Director’s Office prior to March 31 of the year for which the credit is requested. There is no formal voter registration in North Dakota. To be an eligible voter, you must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid ID that contains your name, current North Dakota residential address and date of birth. For more information about voting in North Dakota, visit the Auditor’s Office – Elections webpage or the ND Secretary of State’s website.

National, state, county and city government elections are run by the McKenzie County Auditor’s Office. Find election information by visiting the Elections webpage or the ND Secretary of State’s website.

Absentee ballots are obtained upon application to the County Auditor/Treasurer’s Office and must be returned to that office no later than 5 PM the day before the election if delivered in person, or must be postmarked the day before the election if mailed. A voter who casts an absentee ballot may not vote again at the polls on Election Day. The McKenzie County Public Library offers certain materials for use only while in the Library. McKenzie County offices are open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time. Closures due to holidays or severe weather will be posted in advance.

The Motor Vehicle Branch office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
